I love travelling. Simple is that. Getting to know new cultures, places is just so exciting for me. This summer we traveled around part of Sri Lanka and we were really impressed by the beautiful country, nature and its people. Definitely will be going back again!
One of my ex-yogini students took on a big adventure and moved to Sri Lanka from Dubai just over a year ago. I was curious to see what became of their project as I’ve used to see floor plans and designs on her dining table all over. Here is a little interview with Verity about Ebb and Flow Jungalows and their life in Sri Lanka.
Andrea: How do you find living in Sri Lanka after busy Dubai?
Verity: I LOVE IT! But yes first it was a bit difficult, asking myself questions like: what do I do with my time? how do I structure my day? The result of over 10 years of a corporate desk job and then all choice to structure my day! But when building the Jungalows started it got pretty busy and the time quickly filled up and I found my flow. Strangely I became a morning person and loved getting up early at 6am to ride my bike to the beach, I used to drag myself out of bed at 9am in the past! I also love variety – every day is different… selling coconuts, choosing fabrics, bike rides with friends, writing website content in a beach bar! I do not miss the city life – however I do struggle a bit with the lack of choice when it comes to food! Dubai spoils us with options!
A: Did you manage to adjust easily to the lifestyle?
V: Not sooooooooo easily no, it took maybe 3 months. I felt guilty to start with about not having a structured day and not being “Productive” enough. I had to change my whole definition of a “working day”! However the social time and down time was easy enough to adjust too – I loved riding my bike, meeting new friends for a drink or sunset swim, I knew I missed nature and greenery while in Dubai but I don’t think I realized just how much joy I get from it and how very important it is until I moved here!
A: How did the name Ebb and Flow come about?
V: Kind of interesting actually! We had a competition to find a name for the concept, as we were sick of racking our brains to find the right name! So we had a teaser website under our company name “The Green Tuk Tuk” and basically posted what they are like, the design and what we want to communicate and asked for suggestions to be submitted. In the end not one but two people submitted “Ebb and Flow” and the Jungalow part was my personal quirky addition!
A: The Jungalows are really nice and spacious. I love the view to the sea from the dining area. How many people can you accommodate? Who do you cater for?
V: Thank you! We can accommodate 6 people in each Jungalow. There are 2 bedrooms in each Jungalow and each bedroom can be a kingsize bed or 2 large singles, with an additional bed available! We also have a cot and high chair for babies. I would say we cater for small families or groups of friends (2 couples ideal) – we are a great hang out spot, for people that want to spend quality time together in a unique setting. Of course if you surf then the view of the surf break is priceless!
A: What services are included?
V: Breakfast is included in the nightly rate. We also have a qualified chef who is available to cook for you based on your needs (although his curries are the best!) We also have complimentary 4G internet, a local cell phone, surf boards to borrow and travel advice if you need it!
A: When is the best time to come to your place?
V: Best time as far as the weather, surf and rates is November and February- rates are a little cheaper than December and January and less crowds! Although June, July and September have great surf conditions for beginner surfers!
A: Where is your favourite spot at Ebb and Flow and around?
V: At Ebb and Flow I would have to say on the big cane bucket chair on Flow’s terrace at night, love looking through the branches to the sea in a super comfy chair!! As far as around I would have to say Kahanda Kanda – a gorgeous boutique hotel that offers a set 3 course dinner and lunch. It’s got a view over a tea plantation, tropical luxe design and styling and the food is consistently amazing….
A: What can you do at Ebb and Flow and around?
V: Wow – LOTS! Whale watching, diving, exploring the Galle Fort, Canoe rides, bike rides, can visit ancient temples, tea plantations and lots of cool little beach bars and restaurants! Ebb and Flow is a great home away from home to come back to after a day out exploring south Sri Lanka.
